I It's been an amazing 10 years! I have loved building a business around my passion of providing superior physical therapy, teaching accessible fitness classes, and educating our community about health and wellness. |
A decade ago, I started my business 'Jennifer Sylvester DPT' with the intent to provide the high quality, compassionate care that I felt was lacking in the modern healthcare system.
After moving around the country for the past 20+ years, I have been treated by dozens of doctors. While some care was excellent, too often I was left feeling disappointed in my brushes with healthcare. Face time with doctors got shorter and shorter. Examinations became less and less thorough. One primary care physician in St. Louis was so rushed that he whisked into the room, gave me a 'full exam,' and zoomed back out without ever taking his left hand off the door handle. A friend of mine in medical school was absolutely giddy when she passed her practical exam for annual physicals in four minutes. Four minutes? How much can you really tell about a person's health in four minutes? Is all this 'efficiency' leading to better patient care?
I want a doctor who takes time to listen to the complexities of my story, educates me on the source of my symptoms and various treatment options, and works with me to find solutions that will suit my unique lifestyle and beliefs. With that in mind, I created my business so I could practice in the manner I felt was best for each individual patient. Good healthcare is about guiding a person (or families) toward a way of life that promotes liveliness of the mind, body, and spirit. It bases a Plan Of Care less on lab tests and MRIs, and more on the patient's lifestyle, readiness for change, home and community environment, support network, financial resources, and mindset.
Over the past ten years, I have strived to provide the high quality, evidence-based, patient-centered, compassionate care that I wish to receive when I am the one sitting in a gown on a paper-lined table.
While my business has morphed and transformed since its inception, at its heart remains the inspiring people who have contributed to our community. A number of patients and clients have been with me from the very beginning. Some joined my fitness community during our early days at the Timpany Center, others graduated from physical therapy to wellness services, or check in with me to consult on the ongoing management of chronic conditions. Thinking back on the long history I have with these beautiful people who have become dear friends, I feel overwhelmed with emotion. We are all stronger because we have supported each other along this long journey.
It is such a blessing to have the support and trust of this wonderful community of people. I hope to continue helping people to live their most fulfilling lives for decades to come. |
